Plant walk

As part of our Science learning on the topic 'Plants' we went on a walk around school to see what plants we could find. When we got back to the classroom we identified them. We then planted our own beans which we will look after to help them grow.

Germ experiment

In PSHE we are learning about 'Health and Wellbeing'. This week we learnt about germs and how they spread and how they can make us ill.

We used pepper, water and washing up liquid to conduct an experiment which showed us the importance of washing our hand with soap and water to get rid of germs.

Jack and the Beanstalk

Year 1 visited the Lighthouse Venue in Salford to perform our songs from Jack and the Beanstalk. We had been working very hard to learn the songs and enjoyed joining together with other schools to do our performance.

Nick Sharratt Author visit

We enjoyed a visit from the author Nick Sharratt. He read us his story 'Shark in the Park'. He demonstrated how to draw the pictures from his book and we got the chance to have a go at drawing our own pictures. We were very excited to receive a copy of his book 'Shark in the Park' to keep.

Freddy Fit

We enjoyed taking part in Freddy Fit, we learnt about what we need to eat and drink to keep our bodies healthy.

Y2 trip to Smithill’s Farm

Y2 had a fabulous trip to Smithill's Farm to learn all about The Countryside. We got to see, hold and feed animals.  We then created our own countryside scenes in Art using a collage technique.

Making Bread

Our DT lessons this half term have been all about Bread. We enjoyed tasting different types of bread such as; brioche, sourdough, white bread and bagels. We designed our own bread following a design brief. We then followed a recipe to create our own bread.

Odd Socks Day

As part of anti-bullying week we wore odd socks to raise awareness. We donated £1 to the charity Children in Need.

Curriculum Week

We shared the book 'Mother Earth is Weeping.' We thought about the oceans and how our actions affect them. We looked at all the rubbish and pollution that affects the marine life. We acted out being the sea creatures and though how they would feel. We also thought how we could help solve the problem by putting rubbish in the bin and encouraging others to do the same.

Local Area Walk

We went on a local area walk around school to identify the different features. We discussed the different buildings and what they are used for.

Year 1 Maths

This half term in Maths we have been focussing on Number. We really enjoyed all the practical activities to help us remember the number bonds to 10. We have also started to learn to identify the names and properties of 2D shapes and comparing lengths of objects.

News Report - The Great Fire of London

Year 1 have been learning all about The Great Fire of London. We have been doing lots of brilliant story writing based on the book "Toby and the Great Fire of London". We also acted in role as important people from 1666, Thomas Farriner, Samuel Pepys and King Charles II. We then acted out a news report and asked some important questions and used our learning to answer them.

A baker from a local shop asked us to design her some new bread so we researched, designed and made her some. She even came into school to help us make our bread. It was delicious! We also made pretend donuts for our bakery role play area. We have made lots of wonderful crafts based on the story too and enjoyed acting it out in our small world area.

The Three Billy Goats Gruff Retell

In English, we have been looking at the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. This week, we have been retelling the story and used our body language and facial expressions to create freeze frames from the story! 

Fantastic Finish - Oldham Junk Modelling

Year 1 Local Area Walk

In Geography, we have been looking at the features of our local area, Oldham. As part of this, we took a walk around Oldham and identified the human and physical features in the area, such as The Queen Elizabeth Hall, The Leisure Centre and the tram stop. We had so much fun!
